Frequently asked questions
Straight answers to the questions we hear most. If yours is not here, send it on WhatsApp.
Is APJ Taxation Services a registered tax agent?
Yes. The practice is led by Babu Marimuthu, a registered tax agent with more than 25 years of experience in accounting and taxation, and a Fellow voting member of the National Tax and Accountants' Association (NTAA). You can confirm any tax agent's registration on the Tax Practitioners Board register at tpb.gov.au.
When is the deadline for my individual tax return?
If you lodge yourself, the usual due date is 31 October. Clients of a registered tax agent can generally access later due dates under the agent lodgement program, provided they are on the agent's client list before 31 October.
Where are your offices?
We have two offices: 33 Lexington Drive, Bella Vista NSW 2153 in Sydney's Hills District, and 19 Percival Street, Holder ACT 2611 in Canberra's Weston Creek.
Do I have to visit the office?
No. Many clients send their documents by email or WhatsApp and go through their return over the phone. In-person appointments are available at both offices.
What should I bring to my tax appointment?
Your myGov login or income statement, bank interest and dividend statements, receipts for work-related expenses, rental property statements, private health insurance details and your bank account for any refund. See our full tax return checklist.
How much does a tax return cost?
Fees depend on how complex your affairs are. Tell us about your situation when you enquire and we will give you a quote before any work begins.
Can you help with SMSFs and business structures?
Yes. Alongside individual returns we prepare company, trust and SMSF accounts, lodge BAS, and advise on structuring, cash flow and buying or selling a business.
When is my individual tax return due?
If you lodge yourself, the usual due date is 31 October. If you are on a registered tax agent's client list before 31 October, you can generally access later due dates through the agent lodgement program. Contact us before 31 October so we can add you to our list.
Can I send my documents without coming in?
Yes. Most clients send documents by email or WhatsApp and we go through the return over the phone. You are also welcome to meet Babu at our Bella Vista or Holder office.
I have a rental property. What records do I need?
Your property manager's annual statement, loan interest statements, council and water rates, insurance, repair invoices and any depreciation schedule. Our tax return checklist lists everything in one place.
Can you take over from my current accountant?
Yes. With your authority we request your records from your previous accountant and update the ATO client link, so the handover is straightforward for you.
Do you work with Xero and MYOB?
Yes. We work with both and can help you set up or tidy up your file so year-end work is faster and cheaper.
Do you only work with businesses in Bella Vista and Canberra?
Our offices are in Bella Vista NSW and Holder ACT, but much of the work is done remotely, so we work with businesses across Sydney, Canberra and beyond.
I'm behind on my BAS. Can you help?
Yes. We bring overdue activity statements up to date and can talk with the ATO about lodgement and payment arrangements where needed. The sooner you act, the more options you usually have.
Can you just do my bookkeeping, not my tax?
Yes, although most clients find it simplest to have the same team handle both because year-end is faster when the books are already in order.
What is a private binding ruling?
It is the ATO's written view on how the tax law applies to your specific circumstances. If you follow it and your facts match those you described, the ATO is bound by it, which gives you certainty before you act.
Is there a time limit to object to an ATO decision?
Yes. Objections generally need to be lodged within a set period after the assessment or decision, often two or four years for income tax assessments and shorter for some other decisions. Contact us as soon as possible so the deadline is not missed.
I received a letter from the ATO. What should I do?
Don't ignore it. Send us a copy and we will explain what it means, what the ATO is asking for, and how to respond.
Do you audit SMSFs?
Every SMSF needs an audit by an independent approved auditor. We prepare the fund's accounts and work with the auditor on your behalf.
Can you give investment advice for my SMSF?
We don't provide personal financial or investment advice. We look after the fund's accounting, tax and compliance, and are happy to work alongside your financial adviser.
When should we start succession planning?
Earlier than most people think. Transferring a business or assets can trigger capital gains tax, stamp duty and other costs, and many concessions have conditions that take years to meet. Starting several years ahead gives you the most options.
Do you prepare wills or legal documents?
No. We handle the tax and accounting side and work closely with your solicitor, who prepares wills, trust deeds and other legal documents.
Do you audit not-for-profit organisations?
We prepare your accounts and audit working papers, and work with your independent auditor. The audit itself is carried out by a separate auditor.
Can you help with GST and FBT concessions for not-for-profits?
Yes. Many not-for-profits have access to concessions, such as a higher GST registration threshold and FBT concessions for eligible organisations. We review what applies to you and keep you compliant.
Can you review a business before I buy it?
Yes. We review the financial records, test the assumptions behind the asking price and flag risks before you commit.
Does my business need to lodge an FBT return?
It depends on the benefits you provide to employees and their associates. We can review what you provide and tell you whether you have an FBT liability.
